Foreword
What I thought about, when I began to write this foreword, was the word, ‘Balance.’ This manuscript covers two worlds as I see it. The significance of this writing reminds me of different art forms. The ability of being able to communicate on issues that differ substantially is rare – tying them into a bundle of poetic understanding that can connect people to subjects that relate to each other; connecting the spiritual to the earthly, mundane distractions and attractions; giving options to any who may not be clear as to what one’s mission should be, in the opinion of the Highest, and making it clear how important it is to take the leap from sleep to becoming conscientious. I like that the writer does not beat around the so-called bush in his attempt in trying to keep it real.
It is a distinct pleasure for me to write this piece, because I have known the author for a long time. We have shared our poetry and spiritual beliefs many times. In fact, our pursuit of God-consciousness started at nearly the same time. As fate would have it, we met when we both were part of the same Islamic movement that started in Brooklyn, New York. We both have the experience of having been musicians. We both came up in an era that produced some of the greatest jazz musicians who ever played. I once told him that I could hear the Be Bop in some of his work.
The author has been consistent in expressing his unwavering commitment to his values and how he arrived at them. He gives hints in his literary work where he started and where he continues to strive, to attain that elevated status with his Creator. He speaks from an experience that many have undergone, but only a few have been able to express them in such a potent, clear way. Shareef Abdur-Rasheed leaves no doubt how serious the situation we find ourselves in is. I have found in this book a guide to a stronger understanding where our place is the creation. There is a pathway from what was to what is. The book is motivational and insightful. I feel that the reader will appreciate the sincerity of the writer’s ability to bring them into his views with an openness that is soothing and sometimes abrupt. You should find the kindness and frankness of the book refreshing.
