American-Somali children dominate Qur'an Competition

When it comes to memorizing the Quran, the Somali community in Minnesota takes it very seriously. Children are enrolled in weekend Quran school at a young age and spend years there until they finish their goal of memorizing the entire book.
In Somalia, and in the Somali dominant territories in East Africa, most children don’t have access to a quality education due to war, poverty and corrupt systems of government. But despite these hurdles, most Somali parents invest in a quality Qur’an education.
On December 26 thru the 28, 15 Somali boys and girls from Minnesota attended MAS-ICNA in Chicago, competing against 400 participants in a major Quranic test of knowledge and memorization – and the Somali kids swept the competition. In total, 18 of the winners were Somali American.

Students were tested for four days, reciting sections of the Quran with correct pronunciation of the Arabic text. This is pretty impressive considering that Somalis don’t speak Arabic as a native language. The top prize winner in the toughest division was 15 year old Ahmed Mohamed, who will be sent to compete in another competition in Kuwait this year.
MAS-ICNA’s theme this year was, “leading the youth to become positive agents for change.” According to the organization, this initiative enables young members of the community to showcase their talent as well as their commitment to carry the message of peace and harmony embodied in the words of the Allah (swt.)
